Do you miss free access to the NYT?

Many of us read the New York Times online, and over the past few years have grown accustomed to getting the paper for free.  So it was a disappointment when the Times recently changed its policy to limit free access to the online site.  Many of you have called the OWHL to ask if our subscription to the paper could be used to provide free access.  Unfortunately, the answer is no.  While we subscribe to the Times database (allowing you to obtain full text of almost any article published since 1851, that product does not offer access to the current paper in a readable format.

So what’s a frustrated reader to do?  My personal solution is a subscription to the print edition of the Sunday Times.  I love to curl up on the couch with the “real paper” on Sunday, even though I am happy to read the paper using Times Reader software during the week. Subscribers to the print edition (even if the subscription is only to the Sunday paper) receive free electronic access all week.   Educators are eligible for discounted subscription rates to the print edition.  Information about home delivery is available here: http://bit.ly/it95O6

None of us wants one more bill to pay each month, but I am happy that this small personal contribution is supporting a resource that I value.  After all, did we really expect all the news that’s fit to print to be free forever?
